Pattern Prediction: Diamonds

There's something elegant and festive about diamond patterns especially when they're underfoot.  Whether they're bold or tone-on-tone colored, they do make a strong statement.  Take a look at a few of my favorite diamond patterned spaces:

If committing to paint is an issue,  a diamond patterned rug can offer a very similar effect.

So what do you think, are diamonds your best friend?!?

Pattern Play

Combining patterns can give a room depth, character and excitement.  Whether using monochromatic patterns or large vivid ones, doing it right can be a challenge. Whenever I mix patterns I keep in mind the following 4 things:

  1. Opposites attract
  2. Texture counts
  3. Color on color
  4. Layering

What best suits my aesthetic is mixing floral and geometric patterns in similar color tones and then layering them with something textural:  like a solid fur pillow or a sisal rug.  Another consideration I keep in mind is  that the type of fabric being used is as important as the print on it.  Take a look at a few very nicely executed examples:

Falls' Slithering Fashion Pattern: Snakeskin

I love the complexity of snakeskin patterns, their light and dark variations and the intricate details surrounding them.  Viewing Chloe's fall collection recently, drove me to search for the two faux snakeskin items I own:  a fitted blouse and a wide buckled belt.  Found them both and totally psyched that I did not cull them in one of my many manic closet organizing sweeps.  Take a look at some of my favorite Chloe 2011 pieces, a great vintage find, and ways to incorporate this very earthy, sophisticated pattern into your home.

Now that you know how I feel about one of Fall's pattern choices (we'll chat about the other soon) tell me how YOU feel about it.  Would you wear snakeskin?  faux or genuine?

Pattern Prediction

The intricately embroidered medallions of traditional Suzani tapestries continue to grace modern day interiors.  As bed and pillow covers, even rugs,  these Central Asian works of art will surely make 2011 a more beautiful year.   My favorites are the ones with very dark, almost black, silk threads mixed with bright oranges, pinks and reds.  Their color combinations seem to be endless just like their beautiful designs.  Find the ones you love and share them with me.
